Support strong Canadian climate journalism for 2025
Dear Canada,
If you heard Donald Trump speak Thursday night, then you must be so grateful for your prime minister, Justin Trudeau. Trump’s speech couldn’t have been more terrifying. Most of the pundits here used words like “dark” and “fearful.”
Quite frankly, I thought it was a bad movie script—that will if he is elected play out something like this. But first, his statistics on crime were a gross distortion of the truth.
The Washington Post reported in 2016 that homicides rose by 17 per cent in the country’s 50 largest cities. But these are relative to history, quite low, and could be considered normal statistical variation in a maintained downward trend.
The country has halved its national homicide rate since 1991. Yet he says, “in our nation’s capital, killings have risen by 50 per cent. They are up nearly 60 per cent in nearby Baltimore.” New York’s homicide rate, meanwhile, declined by 25 per cent over the last three months. Homicides in Boston have reached a 10-year low. So spin, spin, to fit your needs Mr. Trump.
“In the President’s hometown of Chicago, more than 2,000 have been the victims of shootings this year alone. And more than 3,600 have been killed in the Chicago area since he took office.” His son pointed out Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the country in his speech. Ironically, Nearly 60 per cent of guns involved in Chicago crimes were purchased outside the state of Illinois— including 20 per cent of those were purchased in his buddy Mike Pence’s home state of Indiana.
The criminal records of the illegal immigrants he refers to includes —convictions of damage to property, littering, vandalizing, possession of very small amounts of illegal drugs, fishing or hunting without a license, jaywalking, and riding public transportation without paying a fare.
I can go on—yes, we have mass killings here in America. And yes we need gun control laws, (Massachusetts just passed their own version of a ban against the sale of assault weapon in the state!) But in general, crime in America is down.
So, what’s what’s a man to do? Trump is going to have to first create crime in order to suppress it. What man in his right mind would do that? I suppose that is a rhetorical question.
His speech was nothing more than his introduction to his “Law and Order” Television Special. The producers are the the NRA—who will arm the country to the teeth. They are his supporters. Since crime is down, ensure there are the most liberal gun laws, whip up enough fear in the people, that they believe crime is up. It is already beginning—homophobic, hate crimes against Muslims, people of color, riots. Protests where police are shot. Unrest. Create civil unrest where there is none. Even encourage what’s called the open carry law, where people openly carry weapons in the street. Donald Trump admittedly carries a weapon. You have a platform, you make speeches like that one inciting deep fear. Go buy more guns.
Then as he pounded over and over again, and Richard Nixon did in 1968, “law and order.” Mow them down. The actors are the people of this country who are “exercising their second amendment rights”. The star is John Wayne (Trump) who comes in to save them all from themselves. What better state to have a convention than Ohio, where historically, Richard Nixon, murdered innocent college students on the campus of Kent State and declare “law and order.” Where the military spied on civilians, killed civilians.
Donald Trump outlined his plan last night. It’s not too hard to read between the lines. He’s going to have the NRA arm the country to the hilt so he can make his crime statistics a reality, then he can create the biggest fascist intelligence agency and police force this country has ever seen.
If you live in Canada, and you’re American, vote against him. If you’re in America and you’re reading this, even if you don’t like Hillary Clinton, vote against him. The speech last night was more than dark, it was Darth Vader acting like John Wayne and that’s not just dark. It’s unholy crap.
