Position Overview:
As the Marketing and Engagement Specialist, in close collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Product, you will be supporting marketing efforts to drive subscriptions, fundraising, email sign-ups, and overall revenue for Canada’s National Observer.
Our journalism is only possible with the funding support of our subscribers and donors. That’s where you come in. As part of the business team, you will play a critical role in supporting the financial sustainability of our journalistic work.
Our marketing strategy focuses on extending the reach of our journalism to wider audiences and deepening engagement with our existing readers to drive subscriber and donor revenue. You will be responsible for writing, coordinating, and executing marketing communications across our email, website, social and other digital channels that communicate the value of climate journalism to our readers and why it is worth supporting.

Qualifications:
- 3+ years of marketing and communications experience, preferably in the media, climate or other social impact sector. We welcome transferable experience from journalists looking to transition to a marketing and communications role
- Genuine interest and passion for making a difference in the media and climate space
- Must be an excellent, persuasive writer and editor that can communicate the value of our work and can convert readers into subscribers
- Hands-on creative doer who is unafraid of problem solving to help us hit our goals
- Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to effectively manage multiple projects autonomously
- Highly collaborative team player who can contribute to a warm and supportive work environment
- Digital marketing experience in email marketing, social media advertising, conversion rate optimization, A/B testing, SEO, and/or marketing funnel analysis, is a major asset
- Experience with our marketing tech stack, that includes Mailchimp, Donorbox, Google Analytics and Piano, is an asset
- Experience in non-profit fundraising, such as donor cultivation and stewardship, is preferred
- Ability to work cross-functionally with members of different teams – editorial, tech, design etc
Responsibilities:
- Write copy, manage, and execute our email marketing and sales calendar to drive subscriptions and donations
- Write and coordinate compelling marketing assets across our primary digital channels that include our website, social media, app, podcast and online advertising
- Coordinate and execute the publishing of our weekly newsletters in collaboration with our editorial team
- Monitor and analyze key performance metrics to optimize our marketing efforts and ensure we are meeting our quarterly goals
- Support the administration of reader engagement efforts that include managing customer support and assisting with events
- Support the planning and execution of our biannual fundraising campaigns
- Collaborate closely with the Director of Marketing and Product and the rest of the business team on all marketing efforts
- Coordinate and administer our marketing tech stack that includes Mailchimp, Donorbox, Google Analytics, and our subscription management system, Piano
