Despite Trans Mountain's repeated assurance that the terminal tanks at the end of the pipeline meet "all relevant regulatory requirements... consistent with environmental best practices," residents still fear for their safety.

Forests — with their significant carbon reduction and removal potential, health benefits, provision of livelihoods and food security for many rural poor and their potential to create an additional 80 million green jobs — are crucial for a sustainable, long-term global recovery.

The federal government has struggled in the past five years to engage constructively with the manufacturing sector. It has juggled with its green agenda and the need to keep its traditional industries running at the same time.

The question is whether Ford will apply his new conciliatory approach to another looming threat — climate change.

Green and inclusive recovery plans make for smart economics, and will lay the groundwork for future prosperity. But a full recovery can't start while this pandemic continues.
