Letter from the Editor-in-Chief

It started with a few freelance pieces during the pandemic, then a few more, and finally a full-time gig.

Each of us must find our own ways to push back, and choose where to join ourselves to larger efforts to protect the planet for the next generations. Your support for Canada’s National Observer is one of those larger efforts. Together, we uncover disinformation and corruption, shine a light on solutions, while ensuring there’s a spotlight trained on the causes of climate breakdown.

Action is more urgent than ever, but policies to cut fossil fuel pollution are under fierce attack while misinformation seems to be everywhere. That’s why your support for Canada’s National Observer’s journalism is so crucial to drive the climate conversation forward.

Last Thursday, I received a letter from Google notifying me that it will be terminating a licensing agreement with Canada’s National Observer that accounts for a slice of our annual operating budget.

Here in Canada, things don’t look so certain. There are dire warnings about what the standoff between Meta and the federal government will all mean for Canadian media companies and Canadians. I’m alarmed, too.  

Climate journalism is challenging work. Day after day, our reporters must confront an existential threat head-on without flinching or turning away. Still, we love what we do.

The value of good journalism, and the importance of supporting it directly, has become increasingly obvious over the last few years.

No other news publication in Canada gets the climate emergency like Canada's National Observer.

You know what really gets on my nerves — besides the whole we’re-all-gonna-die-from-global-warming feeling? Being judged for learning about my community and the world from TikTok.

I want to take a minute to share a bit about myself and why I decided to join Canada’s National Observer.

What strengthens our mission in the face of our challenges is our community of donors. Our journalism is only possible with support from readers like you.

I am witnessing a crisis of hope and I am terrified by the way it intensifies our climate crisis.
