A prominent Alberta utility is seeking to delay a hearing on appropriate remedies for gas and electricity rates the province's utilities regulator says were neither reasonable nor justified.

Regulated utility ATCO Electric has agreed to pay the fine after an Alberta Utilities Commission investigation found it deliberately overpaid a First Nation group for work on a new transmission line, and then failed to disclose the reasons for it when it applied to be reimbursed by ratepayers for the extra cost.

Investigators at the Alberta Utilities Commission are asking the regulator to look into what they say is illegal behaviour by one of the province's largest and most prominent homegrown companies.
