Despite the taboo and illegal nature of killing orangutans, researchers heard evidence of a direct killing from at least one person in 30 per cent of 79 villages surveyed in Indonesia’s Kalimantan region.

Scientists have long drawn up a Red List to alert officials about wildlife and plant species threatened with extinction. Now some say it’s time to flip the script and create a “green status” category that identifies how to bring these species back to sustainable levels.

With Jakarta jammed and sinking, the Indonesian government has chosen Borneo as the site of its new capital, which it promises to make a “forest city.”
