Amnesty International has given the distinction — extended to people incarcerated for their politics, religion, ethnicity or other personal or protected status — to Chief Dsta'hyl, a Wet'suwet'en hereditary chief arrested for his opposition to the Coastal Gaslink pipeline.

Chief Dsta'hyl (aka Adam Gagnon) who represents one of the clans within the Wet'suwet'en Nation was arrested in 2021 for breaching a court order not to impede construction of the Coastal GasLink liquefied natural gas pipeline, and is currently confined to house arrest.

Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chief Namoks is accusing the federal government of violating Indigenous rights as it provides hundreds of millions of dollars to a controversial fossil fuel project snaking through the nation's unceded territory.

The Coastal GasLink pipeline that stretches across northern B.C. is mechanically complete ahead of the company's year-end deadline.
