Global Methane Pledge

Canada and California are kindred progressive spirits on climate change, Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Thursday, June 9, 2022, as he and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled a new blueprint for working together to stave off the worst consequences of a warming planet.

Global methane emissions from the energy sector are about 70 per cent higher than reported by official data, according to new analysis from the International Energy Agency.

The program offers loans of up to $50 million to help oil and gas producers meet or exceed regulations enforcing cuts to their methane emissions.  

Canada is committing to slashing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector as part of a global effort to curb the powerful greenhouse gas.
