Indigenous leaders from across Ontario called on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, for the repeal of a new housing bill they said was passed without properly consulting First Nations and could put their communities at risk.

“Regardless of (the) ruling, we are stewards of the land and protectors of the waters and we will continue to respect and defend Mother Earth grounded in our Treaties,” says AMC Grand Chief Arlen Dumas.

A coalition of environmental groups have already filed a suit against the province over Bill 197, which the province's auditor general said was not compliant with environmental law. But the second planned challenge is likely to take a different angle, as it also centres on treaty rights.
