Thousands of people from the Northwest Territories have returned home this week after a wildfire evacuation order was lifted for Yellowknife's 20,000 residents.

Residents of the capital of the Northwest Territories and two neighbouring First Nation communities have been ordered to evacuate the area by Friday, August 18, 2023, because of an encroaching wildfire.

Two national housing groups are calling on the Northwest Territories to declare a state of emergency for housing Indigenous people, particularly women and girls.
