A 15-year-old from a Toronto theatre family who has already played Juliet in Shakespeare’s tragic love story at the Stratford Festival, Eponine Lee is forging an impressive creative career while balancing the demands of high school.

Toronto’s Young People’s Theatre has been bursting at the seams for years, while most of its staff work in rental space across the street from the heritage-listed theatre. So they bought that building and will spend the ongoing pandemic downtime to renovate both spaces while also fundraising the second half of the $10.5-million project.

Herbie Barnes is an Anishinaabe actor, writer, director and teacher who grew up in Toronto’s economically disadvantaged Jane and Finch area. As the new artistic director of the city’s Young People’s Theatre, he’s determined to open up more opportunities for young creatives.

The Domestic Crusaders was the inaugural show for Canada’s first professional Muslim theatre company, the Silk Road Theatre Company, launched in Montreal Thursday.
