Online voting will open later this month, with a party leader to be chosen Oct. 3. The new leader will take over at a pivotal time, in a moment where talk of a green recovery from COVID-19 is gaining momentum and the possibility of a snap election this fall looms.

The nine contenders jostling to replace Elizabeth May as leader of Canada’s federal Green party sought to win over its young members on Sunday in a debate arranged by its youth council.

“Right now it’s clear in the pandemic that the policies of the Green Party are the policies everyone’s talking about," said Elizabeth May.
