This month, the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board announced the results of this year’s call for bids — a process in which companies are invited to offer money for areas in the Atlantic Ocean they want to explore for oil and gas deposits.

The groups are from Norway, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Argentina and Canada — all countries where Equinor is planning new oil and gas projects. In Canada, Equinor is part owner of Bay du Nord, a proposed deepwater offshore oil project 500 kilometres east of St. John’s.

This month, Norway announced new climate rules for companies where the government is a majority shareholder. Notable on the list is Equinor: operator and part owner of Bay du Nord, set to be Canada’s first deepwater offshore oil project.

The move inviting companies to explore for oil and gas also follows an announcement earlier this year that the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board was shifting its “primary focus” to renewable energy projects.

Environmentalists scoff at applying the term “best in class” to greenhouse gas emissions from oil and gas projects and insist any new approvals contradict our climate goals.
