Tens of thousands of anxious British Columbia residents who were forced to escape raging wildfires have returned home in recent days as firefighters made progress and conditions improved.

John Horgan took the reins of government Tuesday by noting that nearly 40,000 residents have been forced out of their homes by wildfires raging through the province's Interior.

The chief of the Tl’etinqox First Nation said RCMP officers told them to leave or risk having their children taken away. Instead they erected a fire boundary and prepared to fight.

Clark says her province has a lot of experience in the labour−intensive job of clearing flammable debris on the forest floor, but that more intensive predictive work is needed at a national level.
