Canada's environment minister hopes a gathering this weekend of the world's biggest economies and polluters will provide a show of strength for continuing with the Paris climate change agreement.

At an anniversary marking the signing of the Montreal Protocol, Environment Minister Catherine McKenna said the government was still exploring its options on funding for ozone research.

McKenna is one of about a dozen environment ministers from the world's largest economies suddenly invited by White House chief economic adviser Gary Cohn to discuss climate next week in New York.
