Police arrested two of the main organizers behind an antigovernment demonstration on Parliament Hill late Thursday.

The notices state the Emergencies Act gives police the power to seize vehicles that are part of the demonstration and ban people from travelling within a certain area.

Figures behind the protests blockading Parliament Hill and various border crossings are championing new ways to finance their movement — including through their own crypto token — as Ottawa invokes sweeping powers to crack down on their cash flow.

The government will use that act to force towing companies to remove big rigs and other vehicles that are blocking highways and other critical infrastructure, establish zones where public assembly is not allowed, and require banks to suspend or freeze accounts suspected of supporting the blockades, including those belonging to companies whose trucks are part of the convoy.

The Ontario government says it has successfully petitioned a court to freeze access to millions of dollars donated through online fundraising platform GiveSendGo to the convoy protesting COVID-19 restrictions in Ottawa and at several border crossings.

Fintrac deputy director Barry MacKillop appeared before a House of Commons committee on public safety and national security at the request of MPs studying crowdfunding platforms and the financing of extremism. 

Batters was ejected in November after spearheading a petition for party members to sign in hopes that it would force an early leadership review of O'Toole. 

Many Tory members of Parliament have pledged full support to the protesters, including recently elected interim leader Candice Bergen and Pierre Poilievre, the first candidate to announce his bid for party leadership. 

Bergen's Tory colleagues greeted her with a standing ovation in the House of Commons Thursday as she made her debut as interim leader during question period, where she took aim at the Trudeau government for refusing to extend an “olive branch” to the demonstrators.
